Top tips on storing your garden furniture

MyStore Team

Now that the nights are drawing in, and sundowners sat in the garden are becoming a distant memory, it’s time to think about where our garden furniture can go! With a bit of care and attention, outside furniture can last a lifetime, not just a season. In this blog I will look at how to keep your furniture at it’s best so it’s ready go as soon as BBQ season rolls around again!

Preparation is key:

For all types of garden furniture, it will need a good clean before you ‘put it to bed’ for the winter.

Wooden:

Clean off any dirt and dust with a solution of warm soapy water and a damp cloth. Once cleaned, make sure you dry it thoroughly. Wood acts as a sponge for water, so leaving it outside through the winter is not advisable. To prolong the life of your wooden furniture, either rub oil (dependent on the type of wood) or add a layer of varnish before storing.

Wooden Chairs And Table

Always dry your furniture before putting it away for the winter.

Metal:

Clean off dirt with warm soapy water and a cloth or sponge. If the metal has any chips or damage, use a wire brush to try applying a suitable rust-proof paint to the affected area.

Plastic:

While plastic furniture can be pretty strong, it can become brittle over time. Check it over for cracks before cleaning with warm soapy water, and dry before putting away.

Rattan:

Rattan furniture does not love our wet winters and ages quickly without proper care and attention. Grab your vacuum cleaner with the soft brush attachment  to get into all those crevices, then wipe over with a mild detergent and soft cloth. Dry before putting away.

Where to keep your garden furniture

The best place to store your garden furniture is inside. Make room in your garage or shed to store these items over the winter, you will thank yourself next summer! For those of us who don’t have that option, consider your local self storage facility. You will be surprised at how much can fit in a small storage room! (You might be able to squeeze in your camping kit too!)
