Hygge inside your home

MyStore Team - Friday, October 19, 2018.

What is Hygge?

Hygge is the Danish concept of cosiness and intimacy. Pronounced ‘hoo-ga’ or ‘hue-gah’, the word was originally a Norwegian term for well-being but was developed into a way of living by the Danish in the 18th century. Even during the country’s coldest months, when there is very little daylight, Denmark’s inhabitants remain the world’s happiest people!

The key idea behind hygge is to enjoy the environment around you and nowhere is this more essential than in the home. Each room needs to be a sanctuary to sink into and therefore filled with lovely items that allow you to do this. Due to increasingly stressful lives an emphasis is placed on the need to ‘escape’ the everyday to experience true relaxation. Hygge contradicts this notion proving that overall well-being can be enhanced by making small changes to your lifestyle and familiar surroundings, removing the need to escape at all.

To achieve optimal hygge in your own home MyStore Self Storage has put together some wonderful tips for you! So grab a hot drink, wrap yourself in a warm blanket on the sofa and read on…

Light candles:

Create a soft and inviting atmosphere inside your home by lighting candles; you can never have too many candles. The warm glow is perfect for relaxing or socialising with friends.

Sleep in:

Because, why not? If your bed is your happy place then hygge encourages this concept! Snooze a bit longer, read the morning paper, or even enjoy breakfast in bed!

Light the fire:

Log fires are wonderful, they provide a focal point in the home and if you are lucky enough to have a real fire then start using it. ‘Fake’ fireplaces are just as effective at creating that ambience. A wood-burning stove is a great energy-efficient option that the Danes would definitely approve of.

Add some texture:

Introduce plenty of warm, natural materials, such as wood, leather and wool into all your rooms. Bring the outside in by adding potted plants throughout your home to encourage a natural aesthetic, boost your well-being and purify your air.

Get hygge with friends and family:

One of the most important concepts of hygge is to get together with close friends and family in a cosy environment such as your lounge. Less formal dinner party and more get-together over a good bottle of wine accompanied by a spread of hearty food, or save time and order pizza to share!

Clear the clutter:

So many of us desire a mess-free home, and none more so than the Danes. To truly embrace hygge, invest in clever storage solutions that can hide away unwanted visual clutter to create a serene and peaceful space. If your home doesn’t come with storage space then place the things you don’t need to look at everyday into a storage room, consider winter storage at MyStore in Witney.

Picture perfect:

Hygge encourages you to display your favourite photos, art and paintings that bring you joy and happiness. Make a start on decorating your bare walls and notice how it immediately transforms your house into a home.

Home spa:

Turn your bathroom into a sanctuary. The trend for spa-style bathrooms is on the rise. Invest in scented candles, fluffy bath robes, soft lighting and calming music to make your experience as relaxing as possible. Nothing beats a good soak in the tub!

Recycle and upcycle:

The Danes hate waste so reuse and recycle objects around the home. Get creative by upcycling antique pieces of furniture or find a new use for an old item. The good thing about hygge is that nothing has to be perfect; it’s more about the sentimentality of your grandfather’s old armchair for example, than buying lots of brand-new furniture.

Now that you have a beautiful hygge home make sure to take the time to enjoy it!
