We all want to do our bit to minimise waste, especially at this time of year. With so much ‘stuff’ coming into our homes at Christmas time, I thought I’d come up with a few ideas to lower the ecological impact!
Ditch the glittery wrapping paper this year in favour of brown Kraft paper. Forget the plastic Sellotape and go for brown paper tape (available from Waste0 https://wast0.co.uk/shop/) Make it your own by adding ribbons or stamps.
thinly slice oranges pricked with cloves and dry gently in an oven for a few hours. Use in any way you like! On your Xmas tree, add to your present wrapping, tie a few onto your door wreath, or even make up some festive potpourri (just add some fir cones and a bit of essential oil for that Christmassy smell!)
If you choose a real tree, why not try a rooted and potted tree?
The most ‘green’ option by far, as you can re-plant it in your garden year after year! Garden centres like Burford Garden Centre sell these.
Try foraging for things like pine cones and green foliage when you’re out on a walk. Use foraged materials to give your home that traditional feel this Christmas. Sprigs of holly and ivy will give your home that Olde Christmas touch!
Send out recycled cards If you’re planning on sending out Christmas cards this year, make sure you choose ones that are made from recycled materials and donate to charity. If you’re thinking of ditching the card sending this year – consider giving the money you would have spent to your favourite charity instead!
Keep your Xmas shop local –
support our local independent retailers to source as many gifts as you can. Lower your carbon footprint and food miles by ordering your food from local butchers and farm shops (lots of them deliver too making it even easier to support local!)
Make your own door wreath!
No need for it to cost the earth, if you don’t have a ring – fashion one from an old wire coat hanger. Gather some green foliage, cover your wreath (use floristry wire to hold in place) and then get creative with the detail. Use baubles, bows, pine cones, berries, oranges or even real flowers.
